Nigerian rapper Falz, 25, is one of the emerging rappers in Nigeria. His unique English flow laced with Yoruba accent has made him very popular.

Falz’s rise in music is mostly the same. The sin of popular lawyer Femi Falana went to St Leos Catholic Primary School in Lagos and later went to Olashore International Secondary School, Osun state. In 2012 he became a barrister after studying Law at the University of Reading.

Falz started doing music when he was at Olashore. In the year 2007, he released his first body of work ‘Shakara’ a mixtape.

Circa 2010 Falz started infusing heavy Yoruba accent into his music which started bringing attention to him and his music.

In 2014, Falz dropped his debut album ‘Wzup Guy’ which featured the hit single ‘Marry Me’ featuring Poe and Yemi Alade. The success of this album wasn’t what catapulted Falz into stardom. The persona of a razz speaking Yoruba dude he created was what paved the way for him.

Today, Falz is perhaps Nigeria’s number one multi-platform brand. He is a respected rapper, comedian and upcoming actor.

1. Falz the comedian – As Falz’s music was slowly gaining momentum, the tapper took his persona to Instagram and gave it life. With 15 second clips Falz would drop humorous monologues of him unsuccessfully trying to get the all elusive bae. His delivery of a crass Yoruba accent quickly caught fire and made him one of the many Nigerian comedians on Instagram. At one point you could even argue that Falz’s skits were bigger than his songs. People refreshed his Instagram account for hours just to see his latest skit. As his skits got more popular Falz’s music videos started getting airplay as people wanted more of him.

2. Falz the rapper – As his comedic side started popping, Falz s music career started getting attention to. His singles ‘High Class’, ‘ Toyin Tomato’ and ‘High Class’ were moderately successful. However when he dropped the video to the song ‘Marry Me’ things changed completely for him. The video directed by MEX is a humorous attempt by a girlfriend to get her boyfriend to propose. Apart from the humour, the song touches on a contemporary issue. The success of this song helped stabilize his music career. In 2015 Falz released his sophomore album ‘Stories That Touch’ to rave reviews.

3. Falz the actor – Due to the popularity of his razz Yoruba persona, Falz started getting movie offers. So far he has acted in the movie ‘Couple of Days’, and in the TV series ‘Jenifa’s Diary’. Within a couple of years Falz could go on to have a healthy movie career.
Right now Falz is Nigeria’s first multi-platform brand. He is a gifted rapper and comedian who is beginning to make in-roads into Nollywood.
